Jay Cardinal Page 7

[Read Jay Cardinal Page 07: Never A Good Sign]
So I followed up my best start of the run with my worst. Haha wow. Sorry! Well today is my first day of work. Wish me luck. I'm a telemarketer so I look forward to the ceaseless profanities I'll hear. Haha.

Jay Cardinal Page 6

[Read Jay Cardinal Page 06: Envelope Insurance]

Wow, got it up three hours early. That's a new damn record. This will be the last comic with the old site. The changes I was talking about on Friday aren't quite finished but they will be soon. I start my job on Tuesday! A constant source of income means big things for the future of SUTBComics. See you tomorrow. Or I guess Tuesday.

Jay Cardinal Page 5

[Read Jay Cardinal Page 05: School Isn't Out]

Well this one is up earlier than yesterday's so that's good. I almost decided to call it quits since I have a job interview tomorrow and being up this late is not smart by a long shot. Well week one is in the books. I'm happy. Oh, there will be some minor changes to the site next week. The big thing will be free movement between Jay Cardinal and Super Drama and making the front page not useless again. But yeah see you Monday!

Jay Cardinal Page 4

[Read Jay Cardinal Page 04: Grumble Grumble]
Uhm wow. I have no idea how or why this page took as long as it did. I blame my lack of mojo. I tried starting this page at 5, 9 and 12 o'clock and didn't get really rolling still almost oneish. Shameful. Jay what's that in your locker?

Jay Cardinal Page 3

[Read Jay Cardinal Page 03: He's Not Entirely Wrong]

My favorite part of drawing comics is definitely doing sound effects. Something about it just makes a comic more...comicky. I timed how long it took me to do this comic and clocked in at six hours. But I stopped to play videogames and cook and drink soda so I'm going to say this page actually only took maybe four hours. Eh short post today. Enjoy the page and I'll see you Thursday.

Super Drama #1-Let's Get It Out Of The Way Now

[Read The Comic]

Still People Here
May 24, 2010

You have no idea how good it feels to be posting Super Drama episodes again. The old pages need to be reformatted a little bit so instead of posting the entire old series at once I'll post them alongside Jay Cardinal. That way you can experience Super Drama from the very beginning! It'll also give me time to write some scripts since New Super Drama is only going post when a full chapter is finished. I've tried running two comics with updates schedules before. It doesn't work. Also you can see the original post from when the comic first went up and my current posts will probably comment on my thoughts on that post. Yeah it's a little quantum or meta or something...At any rate Super Drama. Welcome back!

Post from Original Update: July 6, 2009
The first comic. This effectively prevents anyone from ever complaining about the content of the comic being too this or that. Ya got that? NO WHINING!

Jay Cardinal Pages 1 and 2

[Read Jay Cardinal Page 01: Chapter One Cover]

If you see the post time is exactly midnight that means I actually managed to get the comic up a little early. Well, welcome to Jay Cardinal. This before you is what you call a cover page. It separates chapters from one another. Go ahead and click next. The actual first page of the chapter is up as well.

[Read Jay Cardinal Page 02: The Answer Key Only Works On Evens]

Okay his first and last names are both kinds of birds. We get it Eric. It's a pun name. But I guess I don't have an excuse for letting his hair be shaped like that. 'S not even a shape of a Jay OR Cardinal. Well I take my character design lessons from Phoenix Wright (fracking birds) and if there's one thing I've learned from PW is that you can never take a pun far enough. (Looking at you Olga Orly.)

And We Begin

"I need a smoothie... "
-Miriam Pataki, Hey Arnold!

You watch Hey Arnold! as a kid and never realize how fucked up the Pataki household is until you're twenty. Anyone over the age of say...sixteen or so, rewatch Hey Arnold! episodes. One because it's a good show and two watch episodes that are really Helga heavy, Helga On The Couch being a good one and just check out that family dynamic. It's intense.

So today's Monday May 24th! And just as promised SUTBComics has some comics for you today! So quick primer. Two pages of Jay Cardinal and one page of Super Drama. Badabing. SD is going to be running the first 47 episodes from the 2009 run while I get material ready for the new run. Right now SD updates alongside Jay Cardinal Mo/Tu/Th/Fr. When those first 47 run out SD will only update every time a chapter is finished and the chapter will upload all at once. I'm going to try to keep Super Drama chapters short (11-16pages) so I get 'em to you faster. Jay Cardinal has most of chapter one written and all of chapter two done (I know that's weird don't worry about it) At any rate enjoy today's pages. I need to get started on Tuesday. Merritt OUT.

The Hardest Thing

"A Runabout! I'll steal it! NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW "
-
Dan Backslide, The Dover Boys

Dan Backslide. My favorite one time cartoon villian? Yes. Yes he is.

So outside of a hiccup with storyboarding essentially forcing me to move back to full scripts after this episode, I wonder if I'm giving too much information at the onset. My creative bible is Futurama and in the first episode the main characters are introduced and the foundation for the characters are set. My first episode doesn't do that and in fact the bulk of the main characters aren't introduced until a little bit later. While that works fine for a cartoon series where you only have to wait a week for another episode, a webcomic even updating four times a week this means waiting weeks or months.

Essentially the conflict boils down to this: Should I guarantee that the story has a solid foundation before getting into the meat and potatoes or should I jump into the meat and potatoes and build a foundation as time goes on. Right now I'm doing the former because even though it means that while the action will start a little slower, once it picks up it can stay up. ...Yes I know that's what she said. STAY FOCUSED.

Don't misunderstand this. Episode One is just as actiony and important as say Episode Four. It's just a little bit of exposition. Laying the groundwork, so you know the characters and understand them and why they do what they do. The only episode in question is One. Everything after one is part of the original Jay Cardinal story and is exactly what it was supposed to be. So yeah. At any rate. JC starts Monday, May 24th. I'm drawing the pages for next week as I type this post so get ready. Merritt out.

ANOTHER site redesign?

"I love my daughters! They are so pretty!"
-
Hakan, Street Fighter IV

I keep saying that this will be the last site update, no wait this will be the last site update and they keep not being the last site update. So this time I'm not going to say anything. So yeah, about my recent absence. College exams kicking my ass. 'Nuff said. But now summer is here and I can work on my comics in peace...at least until I get a job. Seriously I put in 20 applications (this is not an exaggerated number) and I can't describe how pissed I'll be if I don't get a job. I'm trying to work so I can pay for college mostly on my own (tuition and books). That's the idea anyway. The way the numbers work I can definitely swing it...but I need to get hired somewhere first!

Okay webcomic news. Jay Cardinal will be back on schedule starting on Monday May 24th. Fact. If it doesn't post, I'm probably not alive anymore or my computer has been hit by rocket launcher fire. That's how certain I am of it posting. The main goal is to get a week drawn and looking good. My new mantra for JC is "Every page is someone's first" so...I'm gonna try to make each page good enough to make someone want to come back for more. What? Too cheesy? Buh whatever.

Two, I am posting a second series, A Sketchy Situation, which probably won't be acronymed for obvious reasons (probably will just call it Sketchy) which will act as a bit of a biographical comic. I dunno about a consistent update schedule but it'll go up every now and again. I think I'll start that series on the 24th too. Y'know so I can build a buffer and whatever.

My older series will be posted online for your viewing pleasure (or annoyance depending on how you view it) and uhm...that's the bulk of the info for this news post. There may or may not be a news post everytime there is a comic. Just check on update days or follow me one Twitter (Eric is a link whore).

Oh yeah. There's Knight of the Living Game (Game Knight on the sidebar). Uhm, it'll be sort of a video game review slash video game challenge thing. I can't really explain it because well I don't really get it yet either. Well those are the main things anyway! See you guys later this week with an update. (Not Jay Cardinal but y'know something)

Jay Cardinal Debuts

Read the new Jay Cardinal page!

Launch day is finally upon us! There isn't too much to say other than to reiterate
the update schedule is Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Tomorrow's comic will post later in the day but Thursday and Friday will update on time. Here we go!

Retro Revolution

The news just keeps happening here at SUTBComic.com huh? Well as I continue building the foundation of the site (and not studying for Accounting and Calculus...) I have gone ahead and created a site to give my opinion on videogames. Retro Revolution will be comprise of two main parts. The first being "Games You May Have Missed" a look back at games on the NES, Genesis and SNES that are a little less known (at least in my opinion). Yeah everyone who had a Sega played Sonic (and if you didn't how dare you) but how many played say Mickey Mouse and The Castle of Illusion (which is one of the first GYMHM I will do)? The other will just look at games on old systems, my thoughts and flash games on the internet that have a classic feel to them. With each RR article I hope to draw a little picture of myself in the game and go into my thoughts on the story, gameplay, music and overall fun of the game with the occassional challenge to the reader.

The site will go up later this week (if not in a few hours) with the first article being over the Sega Genesis game Mickey Mouse and the Castle of Illusion (did I already say that?) I hope you'll enjoy RR and as I will remind you again, Jay Cardinal begins Monday May 3rd, 2010. So just get ready okay?!

Singularity Reboots

Read the New Singularity page!

As foreshadowed in the April 19 post, Singularity has been rebooted. The current plan is to make Singularity the first SUTBMovie. Basically it would be a long (around 100page) comic with a completely sustaining plot all posted at one time. Think of a SUTBMovie as a super SUTBShort. Now to the people who read Singularity: words cannot explain how sorry I am. All I can do is promise that I am already at work on the Singularity movie and have a rough outline set. The characters will still be the same (Regent Royals and Brigadier Battery and etc. will be in the movie) so there's no worries there and to assure you guys that Singularity doesn't become...well this...I will give periodic updates on the plot and when I start storyboarding you can see some of the panels. So this isn't goodbye. This is a see you soon. NO GOODBYES!

Now Jay Cardinal news. Jay Cardinal will update for the first time on Monday May 3rd. In the April 19 post I mentioned I couldn't decide between a MWF update schedule or a Mon-Fri one. So I took the middle ground and will be updating Monday and Tuesday before taking Wednesday off and then finishing the week out on Thursday and Friday. So I already have a week drawn and a month storyboarded. Good stuff right?

Friday Fever

It had been a while since I uploaded anything to DeviantArt, so I decided to post a little sketch from one of the Jay Cardinal Issue 1 pages.I like the sorta sketch book feel it has. I'm still working on Issue #1 and hope to have the whole thing drawn by April 20th so I can begin coloring either that Wednesday or over that weekend. Remember Denton people I'll be handing out some free previews of Issue #1 on Friday April 30th.

The Jay Cardinal website will be posted tonight or tomorrow but comics won't actually go up until May 3rd. I figure I should have a pretty awesome buffer by then and depending on how awesome that buffer is JC will update MWF or MTWTF. I know Issue 1 will carry about five weeks on a MWF system and about three on a Mon-Fri system. And I have about six other issues planned so I'm not hurting for ideas too much. Well I'm off to Willis Library. I got some shiggety to draw!

3 Panel Movies: The Room

Just a little something I'm going to try when warming up, I'll take a movie and try to condense it down to three panels. Click the picture to see the whole thing. Alternate text for panel 3 was "I don't wanna talk about it".

So...the Room. God... what can be said about it. It's the world's worst written and worst acted movie in the history of the known universe. (Sorry Pluto Nash) And yet, some how it's wildly famous, insanely popular and the lunatic that did it all thinks he's a visionary genius. It's the ultimate "laughing at you not with you" except he's getting paid to be laughed at. Anyway this comic popped in my head after seeing a comment on Octopus Pie referring to "taking notes from Wiseau" and well...the rest is history. The inverse relationship between quality and profit in the movie is staggering. It makes me sad to think in a parallel universe Wiseau Tommy will created a freaking amazing movie and no one watched it.

Also, The Room fans (ha!) may chide me about the Sex panel. Yes I know Wiseau's bare ass is visible in the recycled sex scene, but if I had drawn that I would have just thrown up.

Project Regulus Gets A Bird's Eye View

So on the 1st I posted a picture showing the title of the newest SUTBComic. For those of you who missed it, this is what was posted.

I should have offered a million dollar prize to anyone who could read that. At any rate the first part of the big news today is it's time to really announce the name of Project Regulus and the newest SUTBComic!

And just like that the first thing about Regulus (my love for name puns) has come true. That's the more of less official logo of the series. Now for the next part of the big news...Jay Cardinal is coming to UNT! With Scrappy's permission of course.

On April 30th, in anticipation for Free Comic Book Day (which is really on May 1st, but that's a Saturday...) I will be on the UNT Campus handing out free 8 page previews of Jay Cardinal and The Dropout King which serves as the first chapter of the Jay Cardinal series! So if you live in the Denton area check that bad boy out! I will most likely be handing them out somewhere between the Union and the Business Building. Either there or the In High Places statue (The large freaking Eagle). More details as the 30th approaches. So yeah, stay tuned. And for people not in Denton...sorry...guess you'll have to wait a little longer to see Jay Cardinal. I hope to put the site up sometime over the weekend and that's all for the BIGGEST UPDATE IN JAY CARDINAL HISTORY...(for now!)

April Revelations Day: Episode V

Today on April 1st, many people will be working on elaborate pranks to play on their follow comrades. Well I have no jokes planned and rather than rush together some AFD comic for Singularity I've decided reveal some things about Project Regulus. This is April Revelations Day!

In Episode IV it was revealed that in Regulus a character will die. Hmm...not much to say about that one. And now the big daddy! It's time to reveal the name of Project Regulus!

Reveal #5: Project Regulus is the codename for the new SUTBComic......Gotcha!
Hmm...maybe I should have picked a better title or at least a better day to reveal that. Nobody's gonna believe me.

Okay, you got me. April Fool's! Hahaha it was fun planning all this and I hope you all enjoy April Revelations Day as much as I did. Aww...don't get mad. Here tell you what. Come back in an hour or two (say Midnight?) and I'll make it up to you deal?

April Revelations Day: Episode IV

Today on April 1st, many people will be working on elaborate pranks to play on their follow comrades. Well I have no jokes planned and rather than rush together some AFD comic for Singularity I've decided reveal some things about Project Regulus. This is April Revelations Day!

In Episode III it was revealed that the primary action of Project Regulus would happen on our little mudball Earth. While you might find that unimportant I think it goes a long way in setting up some ideas in your head about what this could be about. Now for maybe the biggest reveal thus far...

Reveal #4: A Character...Will Die
As I said in Episode III talking too much about this one would just spoil it but this is probably my favorite reveal out of all the ones I planned. Well we're in the homestretch and AFD is winding down so I guess there's time for one more reveal.

...So...anyone want to know what Project Regulus's real name is? See you in four hours...

April Revelations Day: Episode III

Today on April 1st, many people will be working on elaborate pranks to play on their follow comrades. Well I have no jokes planned and rather than rush together some AFD comic for Singularity I've decided reveal some things about Project Regulus. This is April Revelations Day!

In Episode II it was revealed that Project Regulus will display my love for name puns. Name puns are actually a large part of how I design characters. It usually works in two ways either I create a character and his/her personality and try to assign a name to it OR I come up with a name and assign a personality and design to the name. In some cases (as in the one I talked about in EpII) a character's name will be solely based on the relationship they share with another character.

Reveal #3: Most of the Action Happens On Earth
I know. I know you're beginning to think some of these reveals are a little trite. Oooh! The comic takes place on Earth! That's cool! I really didn't know that. Okay just calm down. The next reveal will be a BIG one. As in, if I talked too much after posting the reveal it'd be a SUPER SPOILER.

See you in four hours for the next part of April Revelations Day!

April Revelations Day: Episode II

Today on April 1st, many people will be working on elaborate pranks to play on their follow comrades. Well I have no jokes planned and rather than rush together some AFD comic for Singularity I've decided reveal some things about Project Regulus. This is April Revelations Day!

In Episode I it was revealed that Project Regulus would not be a continuation of any former SUTBComic. While that might not seem like a big deal if you think Singularity is the only comic I've drawn I guess listing out all my past projects will help the gravity of that statement. Since 2005 I have worked on the following comics:

Chaos Control (Sonic sprite comic)
File Not Found (MMORPG comic)
The Adventures of Captain Laserman (which became the basis for Fallout)
Tales of A Dragoon (FF fan comic)
Coming Soon
Assassins Anonymous
Super Drama
Fallout (which became the basis for Singularity)
Set Up The Bomb
Singularity
Nocturnal Transmissions
Until Next Time

So...yeah.

Reveal #2: My Love For Name Puns Will Be Emphasized
A slightly more minor thing but all the named characters I have created as of this post have some sort of name pun. The main character's is pretty obvious and when you see it paired up with another person's pun you ask yourself: "What are the odds that those two would know each other with names like that?"

The Answer: Outside of my universe very very slim.

The next Project Regulus reveal happens at 2pm Central Time! See you in four hours!

April Revelations Day: Episode I

Today on April 1st, many people will be working on elaborate pranks to play on their follow comrades. While this has already caused a friend of mine to be forced out of her dorm shortly after finishing her shower (yowza) in the baby hours of the day, most jokes are innocent in nature and pretty damn funny.

Well I have no jokes planned and rather than rush together some AFD comic for Singularity I've decided reveal some things about Project Regulus. The reveals will range from obvious (the webcomic will be online) to something big (say maaaaybe the revelation of the comic's name)

So let's kickoff April Revelations Day with the first thing about Project Regulus!

Reveal #1:Regulus Is NOT A Continuation Of Any Former SUTBComic
I say this with as much emphasis as I do because in drawing some of the characters (one in particular) you will find that (s)he great resembles a former SUTBComic character. While I wanted to change h(is/er) appearance to prevent the look-a-likeness I find the design works fits the character great. Sadly, I fear that this may effectively end what I hoped to be a comeback for a certain series but I think the character will carry the spirit of h(is/er) design inspiration with much gusto.

Stay tuned more April Revelations Day to come later today!

Every Kid's Nightmare

Does anyone remember the baby episodes in little kid shows? The main character's parents are about to have a baby and they think that because there is a new baby the parents will love them less at best and at worst completely forget they exist. I think DW or Arthur may actually briefly imagined yet-to-be-born Kate as a large bully forcing the older sibling to work for their bidding. However, after talking to other kids with siblings and then their own parents, the main character realizes that their parents will continue loving them just as much even after the baby is born.

Singularity is watching his baby brother steal the spotlight in my life. Part of the lack of Singularity episodes as of late has been because of my UNT schedule and it's in part because it is quicker to get in a groove planning Regulus than it is getting in a groove drawing Singularity.

Anyway. Regulus news! I have 7 full episodes planned right now which is more or less what I wanted. Now I just need to make some web only shorts. After I have everything planned I can announce some release dates. Until then, just wait okay?

Project Regulus Site Is Now Up

The Project Regulus site is now up at sutbcomic.com/regulus/index.html. As you will see the site right now is pretty bare but you will get to see the site built as we go. Right now the base story of Regulus has been finished and I'm beginning to work on Season 1's episodes. Stay tuned.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Welcome To The Blog

Welcome to Project Regulus a semi secret project for Set Up The Bomb Comics (http://sutbcomic.com HINT HINT HINT). Project Regulus is a story that I'm working on that is more or less going to be a fun way for me to practice writing short comic stories from beginning to end.

In short it's going to end up being episodic.

What else can I say about the project right now other than it will be heavily influenced by 1990s cartoons (Dexter's Lab, Johnny Bravo, Hey Arnold!, CatDog and the like) in both art style and comedy. Or at least that's the hope.

This blog will keep up with the project as I slowly piece it together and have it ready for the internet to see. I'm excited and you should be excited.

I guess I can leave you with one parting word that may or may not be important down the road, "Kid, we're not superheros. We're reporters. Sometimes that's twice the fun with half the responsibility."
